Do doctors really care about their patients

We found that surgeons do not like their patients equally. Their feelings are associated with surgeon and patient characteristics, and with patient satisfaction. Our findings have important implications for surgeons seeking to improve care striving to enhance or maintain their own career satisfaction.

Though instances of doctors and patients entering romantic relationships are indeed rare, it does sometimes happen. Physicians sometimes have sexual relationships with patients, or with former patients. Sometimes the initiator is the physician, and sometimes it is the patient.

The majority of respondents (60.4%) completely trusted their physician “to put their medical needs above all other considerations when treating their medical problems” (Table 3) Few patients did not trust their physician at all (1.7%).

A safe way to approach the doctor is to use “friendly flirting.” You can do this by creating an opportunity for yourself to talk with the doctor. Try calling and speak to him at work, either to ask him a question about the follow up treatment of your eye, or to thank him for the great care he provided you.

Surgeons do require a high level of confidence in their own ability; however, they need to communicate that confidence with humility, rather than arrogance. Surgery is an innately risky business; surgeons need to be in charge, make the tough calls and know what to do if things do not go according to plan.

Consumers may choose to switch doctors for a variety of reasons, such as to receive better treatment or service, save money, or find someone closer to their home or work. For patients who have switched away from one practice to another, doctors and consumers have different impressions about the reasons for that switch.
